They say the girl with a face is the one

(And we, readers, know it's obviously a lie)
메이드는 그 말을 의심조차 하지 않습니다.
The maid does not doubt what she was told.

저 개인적으론, 이 작품은 초반과 그 이후가 인상이 상당히 다르다 느꼈습니다.
I felt that this manga changes its atmosphere after some chapters.

초반은 공식 말마따나, '고딕 호러'입니다.
Some earlier episodes are 'Gothic horror'.

메이드는 유능하진 않지만 끊임없이 발전하려 노력합니다.
The maid isn't really good at her job, but she's patient and keeps trying to be better.

명탐정코난 범인도 얼굴표정은 보여줬건만

아가씨는 자신의 존재에 대한 자괴감이 있지만,
The noble girl doesn't like herself by the way she is,
메이드를 질투하거나 미워하지 않고,
but she never gets jealous of the maid.
어쩌다가 짜증내버려도 금세 반성하고 사과합니다.
Sometimes she might get angry, but soon she regrets it and apologizes.

두 소녀는 진심으로 서로를 아낍니다.
Their friendship is not a fake.
둘이서 실수하고, 고치고, 배우고, 화내고, 화해하죠.
They make mistakes, fix things, learn, get awkward, and be cool.
내용 자체만으론 잔잔한 일상물/치유물이라 해도 손색이 없습니다.
It's a normal scenario of #Slice_of_Life, #iyashikei.

그러나, 이걸 순수하게 일상물/치유물로 받아들이기엔 걸리는 점이 있으니...
However, you can't get iyashi(mental healing) from this manga
은은하지만 확실하게 풍기는 아동학대의 냄새입니다.
because of the hints of child abuse we can't miss.

양식있는 독자라면 쎄할 수밖에 없는 힌트가 자꾸 던져집니다.
We find scenes any decent reader would be alarmed.
"아가씨를 위해 방청소 열심히 할게요!"
→"아니아니 너 미성년자잖아, 왜 보호자도 없이 노동중인데?"
"Let me clean the room for you, milady!"
→"But hey, you're a child. You're supposed to have a parent, not a job!"
"로봇인데도 밥과 물이 필요하고, 부딪히면 아프네요~
전 참 정교하게 만들어졌네요! 신기해라~"
→"저기 얘야? 일단 저택측의 주장을 조금 의심해보지 않을래?
암만 봐도 니가 인간이고 니 아가씨가 인간 아닌 무언가인데?"
"I'm a humanoid but I need to eat and drink.
I even feel pain if I fall down! I'm so elaborate! How amazing~"
→"Look, why don't you doubt what they say?
Obviously you're the human and your lady is some... thing."
"생각하지 말자, 봉사하는 것이 로봇의 행복~♬"
→"아니 동요까지 세뇌용 프로파간다냐고...orz"
"A happy robot wouldn't think~♬ A robot is happy when it works~♬"
→"Who wrote the song? Joseph Goebbels?"

이렇게 '일상물의 탈을 쓴 호러'로 독자들이 저택 생활에 익숙해지고 나면,
Eventually, the maid (and readers) learns how to do a job in Shadow house,
의외로 전형적인 소년만화같은 전개가 시작됩니다.
then she deals with surprisingly typical shonen manga story.
헌터시험도 치르고, 스탠드도 발현하고,
They pass the hunter exam, become a stand user,
같은반 친구랑 고렙몹 레이드도 뛰고,
raid a monster above their level,
납치당한 공주도 구출하고,
save a kidnapped princess,
그 과정에서 처음으로 만해!를 발현하고요.
and succeed their first bankai.
큭큭큭, 납치범? 그놈은 우리 삼천왕 중 최약체지.
And the kidnapper is the weakest one in 'Strong 3'.

사실 연출이랑 내용은 딱히 초반보다
덜 호러틱해지진 않습니다만,
Frankly, the coloring and the atmosphere
hasn't been brighter compared to earlier part.
저 개인적으론 헌터시험부터는 별로 무섭진 않더군요.
It's just me. I don't feel it's a horror since the hunter exam started.

초반의 세뇌교육&미성년자 노동력 착취는 진심 무서운데
Brainwashing a child and making her work was no-no,
이후의 갈등들은 너무 판타지스러워서 공감이 안 간달까요...
but soon it becomes too unrealistic to relate to.

마치 세계정복을 노리는 사악하고 코없는 마법사보단,
Like, you find it more disturbing to
학생들에게 안티백서 사상을 전파하기 위해
have an anti-vaxxer professor sent by a conservative party
보수 정치권에서 낙하산으로 꽂아준 교장이
than a noseless, evil wizard
더 피부에 와닿는 악역인 것처럼요.
trying to conquer the whole world.

애니는 아무래도 원작에 비해 전개가 빠른데,
스토리를 어색하지 않게 잘 압축해 놨습니다.

딱 하나, 귀족 아이들끼리 친해지는 과정 묘사가 빠진 건 아쉽더군요.
그리고 메이드&하인들이 세뇌 풀리는 과정이 좀
'번갯불에 콩 구워먹는' 느낌이긴 했어요.
